Hellenismos: now!

Kardinal Schönborn sprach in einem Interview mit der Tiroler Tageszeitung (Ausgabe 6./7. Juni 2007) davon, dass "wir in einem Umbruch von der Volkskirche zur Entscheidungskirche" leben, zu der also anscheinend auf kurz oder lang nur mehr jene gehören (sollten?), die sich wirklich zu ihr bekennen.

Das wäre ja mal ein netter Ansatz, wenn man endlich aufhört, kleine, unmündige Menschen aus Tradition zu einer Institution zu addieren, und dazu übergeht, sie zu fragen, welcher Religion, wenn überhaupt, sie angehören wollen. Wenn man damit aufhört, Religion nur zur rituellen Aufbereitung von Lebensphasen zu mißbrauchen und beginnen würde nachzudenken, was Religion wirklich ist und sein kann. Wenn Religion nicht nur auf dem Papier existiert, sondern auch in den Köpfen (und Herzen) der Menschen.

Das meinte der Herr Kardinal natürlich nicht, natürlich will er, dass die Katholiken wieder bewusster katholisch sind, und andere Religionen sind ihm ziemlich egal, aber ich finde seinen Grundgedanken trotzdem nett und wende ihn jetzt eben global an. Ich sehe hierin einen Aufruf, sich mal zu informieren über Religionen, ja, es gibt mehr als nur eine! Und ich füge hinzu: ja, es gibt mehr als einen Gott!

Entscheidung zur Religion, das hat schon was.

Aus einem eMail, das ich gestern gekriegt hab:

The European Union has a strong interest in stopping discrimination of any kind within the Union. (This includes such matters as colour, ethnicity (race), gender, age, sexual preference, and of course RELIGION.) This was in part one of our arguments in Greece and yet one of our hopes: "How can Greece an EEC member behave in this way?" Well, the European Union has been in Greece recently and on the threat of substantial fines requied Greece to pass laws on discrimination - including discrimination in the workplace etc which is a big thing for our followers and the many other groups of people who have suffered from discimination of various kinds. These laws have been under discussion in the last few months and EUREKA they have come into force more or less with the ink drying on the papers as I write to you.

Now to ensure that grievances under the new laws are dealt with appropriately, the Greek Govt has been required to set up a national committee (answererable to the EU committee) to deal with policy and problems with, and that arise, from the new laws. This committee is made up of various NGO's and other groups within Greece who have an interest in these laws, but is also made up of Govt ministers and is an official working (and reporting) group. Quite top level stuff actually. And EUREKA again - YSEE a well organised and moderate hellenic group in Athens (and my main associates in Athens thesedays) has been asked to join this committee.

So what does this all mean in practical terms ? Well it means a huge and unbeliveable amount really. It means that we have a "legal" redress and framework for any problems we have both at national Greek level and on an individual leval. We also have a fast track to the correct people at the EEC who will listen to the grievances and problems we have and hopefully deal with them. One of the biggest tools used against us in the past by the Orthodox Church and authorities was "silence" - no replies to letters of any sort - no means to get anything done, papers signed etc etc. So this really is a monumental step for us and piece of real and substantial progress for everyone concerned.

Now that this committe is in placce we can really start our work in earnest ......... bringing to light any problems in the workplace, problems of peaceful assembly, places of worship etc etc. The real work of myself and other people concerned can now start on a professional and logical footing. (and really I only want to see followers of the Greek Gods in Greece enjoy the same religious freedoms and freedom for persecution and discrimination as they would in say London or New York).
